Getting Rid of Bedroom Allergies

Indoor allergies

Allergies can make you miserable. But with some heavy duty cleaning, you won’t have to worry about indoor allergies messing up your sleep schedule.

With spring quickly approaching, the last thing anyone wants is to be sneezy and stuffy both inside and outside of their home. So before you begin sneezing, check out some of our tips to make your bedroom an allergy-free zone.

Kicking Out Dust Mites

One of the biggest causes of allergies and asthma is the presence of dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic bugs that can cause wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and tightness in your chest. One of the best places for dust mites to live is in your bedding including inside your mattresses. To help eliminate this allergen, you should vacuum your room, including under the beds and furniture. If you have the option, replace the carpeting with hardwood or linoleum flooring with washable area rugs to lower the chances of dust mite allergies. You should also wash your bedding every week in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. Using a dust mite-proof cover for your pillows, mattress, and box spring can also help to eliminate this problem.

Changing Window Treatments

While blinds and heavy drapes look nice on your windows, they could actually be causing your allergies. Blinds and drapes actually catch the dust in your room so switch out these window coverings to lighter, washable curtains and roller shades to avoid dust piling up. While you have the blinds and drapes taken down, make sure you take the time to wipe the window frames inside and out and clean the glass. It is important to clean these elements of your home regularly to prevent mold and mildew from developing.

Dusting

Dust in your bedroom can be a huge problem if it isn’t removed quickly so make sure you dust your room regularly to avoid a buildup. Keep knickknacks and fabric accessories to a minimum to avoid dust. Move books and magazine to other rooms in your home so you can dust less often. Avoid storing things under your bed as items attract dust.

A New Mattress

Older mattresses can contain skin cells, dust mites, hair, and pet dander from years of use. If you start to notice more and more allergy symptoms when sitting or lying down in bed, it might be time to replace your old mattress with something fresh and clean.
