How Firm Should Your Toddler’s Mattress Be?
Mattresses for toddlers should be fairly firm, as fluffy or soft mattresses can potentially cover your child’s face and cause breathing problems or suffocate them. Firm mattresses for toddlers are a little different than firm mattresses for babies, so any mattress with an Indentation Load Deflection rating above 36 will be fine. If the mattress from your toddler’s crib is still in good condition, it is perfectly fine to use that for both purposes. Many parents repurpose their crib mattress until their toddler is over 3 years old and requiring a bigger bed to accommodate their size.
What Should the Mattress Be Made Of?
With so many types of mattresses available, it is overwhelming to choose one material! Mattresses can be made with coils, springs, cotton, memory foam, wool, or other materials. The material does not matter at the end of the day, as long as the mattress is firm enough that it is safe for your toddler. Cotton mattresses work well for children with allergies or sensitivities, as they are breathable and very easy to clean. Wool mattresses are very good at maintaining warmth for toddlers that sleep in colder climates or chillier parts of the house. Toddler mattresses made from coils and springs work well at supporting their body and preventing any accidents. Memory foam can also provide good support, as long as it isn’t too soft.
When choosing a material, keep in mind that the mattress you choose for your toddler needs to be able to maintain a good level of firmness for more than just a couple of months. Consider purchasing a waterproof mattress cover to prevent any unfortunate spills or bedwetting accidents. This protects the mattress from moisture and accumulating any mold or mildew. Waterproof mattress covers also protect the materials used to make the mattress so that they can maintain a good degree of firmness for years to come.
