What to Look For in Your New Mattress

With so many types of mattresses on the market, it can be difficult to know where to begin!

There’s a lot to consider when you’re trying to pick a mattress that will work for

you. This guide will help you sort through a couple of your options.

What Type of Mattress?
People usually think that it’s the firmness of a mattress that provides support. This
is not the case. The type of mattress you choose will be your best indicator of
support, and from there you can choose a level of firmness that works for you.
Open spring mattress: also called open coil or continuous coil mattress. They have
one long piece of metal wire coiled into lots and lots of springs. They tend to be
lighter than others, but also aren’t as supportive.
Pocket spring mattress: these are generally more luxurious than the open spring.
Instead of one large wire, each coil is its own bit of wire with its own little fabric
pocket. Each spring can move independently of the others so this type of mattress
can provide more support. They come in soft, medium or firm.
Memory foam mattress: Memory foam is a hypoallergenic, moldable material that
responds to temperature and weight. It will mold to the shape of your body,
relieving pressure on your joints and giving you plenty of support. Because it molds
to your body, some people don’t care for the sinking sensation this can cause.
Latex mattress: These mattresses are filled with latex foam. If you tend to get hot
when you sleep, this is a good option to consider because latex foam is very
breathable. They are also great for users who have issues with asthma and allergies.
The material can be quite firm, though, so it’s a better option for those who prefer a
firmer bed.
What Size?
 Twin 39” x 74”
 Twin XL 39” x 80”
 Full 54” x 74”
 Queen 60” x 80”
 King 76” x 80”
 Cal. King 72” x 84”
Keep in mind that these measurements are not necessarily exact and can vary by
manufacturer. This is just a general guideline.
How Firm or Soft is it?
So you’ve figured out what type of mattress you need, and how big, but how firm do
you want it to be? Keep these points in mind:
Soft: Usually best suited to side sleepers or those who tend to shift positions a lot.
Medium soft: Good for those who shift around a lot but provides more support than
a soft mattress.
Medium firm: Provides excellent lower back support for those who prefer to sleep
on their back.
Firm: This type of mattress is best for people who like to sleep primarily on their
front.
