We’ve all had those nights where we feel so tired and can’t wait to sleep, but our mind won’t shut off and keeps us awake for hours. Whether you’re feeling nervous for the next day or drank too much caffeine before bed, those hours tossing and turning can feel like an eternity. The next time you’re having one of those nights, follow these tips to help you get the peaceful night sleep you deserve.

Don’t Count Sheep

You know the old saying to count sheep to help your sleep patterns? A study proved that saying is actually false, and counting sheep doesn’t provide any help for falling asleep. What does help is picturing a relaxing scene or memory, whether it’s the beach or a peaceful meadow. Putting these calm and still images in your mind instead of counting allows you to relax and fall asleep faster.

No Electronics

We know, it’s difficult to stay off your phone or not watch TV when you can’t sleep, but try your best to resist this urge. Electronics only make it harder to fall asleep, so once your eyes fall on the screen, you are only making it harder for your body to get any rest. If you have trouble falling asleep a few nights a week or more, try to turn off all electronics at least an hour before bed. Technology negatively affects our quality of sleep, and you may find that you sleep better when keeping your phone and TV out of the bedroom. Instead, read a book or take a walk if it’s been over 30 minutes of attempting to sleep.

Breathe Deeply

It can be frustrating when all you want is to be able to fall asleep but do your best not to get upset or stressed. Once we start thinking about how badly we need to sleep, you’ll find yourself more restless and your heart may be beating faster. Take the time to close your eyes and breathe as deeply as possible, only focusing on your breathing. Many people say the 4-7-8 method works for them, where they breathe in for four seconds, hold their breath for seven seconds, then slowly exhale for eight seconds. While this method is simple, it works like a charm!
