You may have heard about weighted blankets in the past year or so, as they have become more popular recently. The heavy blankets are different than any other bedding you’re used to, as they are filled with glass beads, poly pellets, or other weighted materials. They are advertised to help with anxiety or depression, and to help people relax and improve their sleep quality. Continue reading to learn more about weighted blankets and how they work!
Deep Touch Pressure
Weighted blankets are said to help with anxiety and stress as they have a soothing effect called Deep Touch Pressure. This is the sensation you feel with behind held or hugged, and the pressure helps your body relax by reaching the deep pressure touch receptors throughout your body. A weighted blanket can help you feel secure and safe, and many people find it allows them to drift off into a deep sleep.
Studies have found that Deep Touch Pressure also leads to an increase in serotonin, which is associated with feelings of happiness. The studies also found that the pressure may lead to a decrease in cortisol- which is a hormone that’s released under stress. This balance of higher serotonin levels and lower cortisol levels allows your body to sleep soundly.
Weighted Blankets Aren’t For Everyone
Although weighted blankets provide many benefits to those who suffer from anxiety or ADHD, the heavy blankets are not safe for everyone. For example, a study found that children with ADHD slept soundly with a weighted blanket and even had fewer disturbances in school, but small children should not use the blanket unless prescribed by a doctor. This is also true for the elderly, as the blankets can be heavy and difficult to move. Elderly sleepers should first check that they can move and get out of bed without extreme effort. Also, those who suffer from circulatory issues or claustrophobia may find that a weighted blanket is not the right choice for them.
