Last weekend marked the start of another daylight saving time. With the start of another six months ahead of us, there are some things you should be putting on your weekend to-do list. But in order to put them on your list, we think it is important for you to know a little bit about daylight saving time. Let’s take a look!
The History Behind Daylight Saving Time
Although Benjamin Franklin is attributed to daylight saving time (DST) it was actually developed by an Englishman named William Willett. Franklin is attributed to this system because of a satirical essay he wrote after being awoken at 6 a.m. by the Parisian summer sun. In the essay, Franklin talked about the virtues of “early to bed and early to rise” in order to save money. But he only proposed a change in sleep schedule, not the time itself.
William Willett, the actual inventor of DST, thought of it in 1905 while enjoy the summer sun on the outskirts of London. His proposal was to move the clocks forward by 80 minutes between April and October so people could enjoy more time in the sun. He published this epiphany in 1907 and devoted his life to it until he died in 1915. Willett was never able to see the adaptation of this plan but in April of 1916, Germany was the first country to embrace this change to help conserve energy in World War I. Soon the UK and US joined to help conserve energy during war time. It wasn’t until 1966 when the US enacted the Uniform Time Act when it became a practice for almost every country in the nation. So what does this time change mean besides an hour less rest?
Flip and Rotate Your Mattress
Since it is recommended that you flip or rotate your mattress every six months, daylight saving time is the perfect time to do it. Flipping and rotating will allow your mattress to wear evenly and help you to avoid breaking down the material. If you have a no-flip mattress or a pillow top, rotate your mattress instead of flipping it.
Wash Your Pillows
Oils and dead skin cells can accumulate in your pillows over time. It is important to give them a good cleaning every six months. Daylight savings time will give you a chance to put them outside for some fresh air after running them through the wash cycle. If your pillows are more than two years old, it is also time to replace them with a fresh model.
Washing Protectors and Pads
Think of your sheets and pillow cases as the first line of defense against your skin’s oils and dead cells. The next defense is the pillow and mattress protectors and mattress pads. These accessories catch the brunt of your skin and oils so it is essential that you wash them every few months to get them clean and refreshed for battle. So after washing your pillows, throw these accessories in as well as your sheets to get your bed ready for the spring and summer months.
