Chemicals are all around us and in the things that we eat, drink, sleep on, read, and sit on. While many chemicals are completely harmless and shouldn’t be worried about, others are potentially dangerous to you and your family. What types of chemicals are in your bedding and mattress, and should they be there?
Bedding
The chemicals in your bedding can be either constituent or additive. Constituent chemicals are actually in the bedding, or what it is made from. An example of this would be the cushioning, support, insulation, linings, or covers that you use on your mattress. Additive chemicals, on the other hand, are applied to the mattress for specific purposes. Some of these purposes include better temperature control, coloring, fragrance, micro bacterial protection, and flame retardation.
Why Are People So Worried?
Most of the concerns about chemicals in mattresses relate to foam mattresses including polyurethane and memory foams. Memory foam is a type of polyurethane and polymer. Two of the largest concerns about memory foam are how the foam is processed and “out-gassing.” Using old techniques, processing foam had harmful environmental effects. Some people still object to the usage of fossil fuels in the production of consumer goods at all, however. The other concern is about VOCs or volatile organic compounds. Some of these are proven to be harmful, others have unpleasant odors, and others could be having effects without us knowing it.
What Are Your Options?
As with anything, do research into the chemicals used on mattresses to decide your comfort level and needs. If you are chemically sensitive, you might need to look at different mattress options that aren’t infused with additional additive chemicals. Talk to your doctor about your concerns.
