For most people your time at home is either spent in bed or cleaning your house. But why is it no one ever thinks about cleaning their mattresses? You clean your sheets, mattress pad, pillows and pillow cases, but not your actual mattress. Isn’t that a bit like dusting the TV but not the stand or washing just the fronts of your dishes but not the back? Well, let’s give your mattress the TLC it deserves!
Vacuuming
For pet parents, this is an important one. Pets, just like their owners, like to sleep in beds and it isn’t always their own. When a pet sleeps on your bed, it is inevitable there will be fur, dander, and even pests like fleas left behind. Every time you change your bed, run a handheld vacuum over your mattress to get rid of bugs, hair, and skin cells.
For Stains
Stains are a hard one to tackle. Mattresses aren’t something that you can pick up and toss into the washer. And you definitely do not want to use ammonia or bleach on your mattress. To get rid of stains, dilute a mild detergent like dishwashing liquid with water. Then take a wash cloth and rub a little on the stain in a circular motion. To dry the mixture, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and wait 30 to 60 minutes. Once it clumps, it is done. Vacuum that stuff up and your mattress will be odor and stain free!
Here Comes the Sun
If you want to disinfect your mattress without chemicals, put it out into the sun on either a deck or porch. The sun will heat the material and get rid of the germs. It will also remove any moisture left from the detergent mixture and will remove allergens.
Rotate It
Before putting your clean mattress back on the bed, make sure to rotate the mattress. Way back when, mattresses had two sides for sleeping, but most modern mattresses only have padding on one side which means you cannot flip them like your parents always told you to do. So the alternative is to rotate it. Make sure the foot of the mattress is now at the top of the bed. To make sure this is the right way, put a small mark on the bed or sticky note to help you tell the difference.
Protect Your Mattress
Now that your mattress is clean, don’t forget to add a mattress protector and pad into the mix. These protectors and toppers will help keep your mattress from getting dirty and stained. There are a couple types of mattress protectors on the market and you can choose one based on your needs. If you suffer from allergies, than a mattress encasement for allergy protection is for you. If you are more worried about bugs, than a bed bug protector is for you. For stains, general dirt, and dust, you can buy a removable mattress topper. These come is styles of a fitted sheet, an anchor pad with elastic, a memory foam topper with extra cushioning, or the traditional egg crate. These toppers and protectors will help keep your mattress clean and comfy to sleep on.
