Common Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders

Sleeping disorders can leave your feeling tired even after a full night’s rest.

Tossing and turning, your mind going a mile a minute, and your inability to shut your body down for the night. These are all signs of a sleep disorder. There are a lot of sleep disorders that you can suffer from. So how do you know it is a sleeping disorder and not just a bad night’s sleep? By looking at these common sleep disorder symptoms.

Insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders. Roughly 60 million Americans are affected by this sleep disorder every year. Insomnia is the inability to get the amount of sleep you need in order to wake feeling refreshed and well rested. It is often a symptom of another problem such as stress, depression, anxiety, and even a medical condition. It could also be caused by your lifestyles such as lack of exercise, the amount of caffeine in your diet, or medications. Common signs and symptoms of insomnia include difficulty falling asleep at night or getting back to sleep after waking up during the night, frequently waking up during the night, fragmented or light sleeping, the need to take a supplement to go to sleep, and sleepiness or low energy throughout the day. In most cases, insomnia can be helped by making lifestyle changes. Things like sticking to your usual sleep schedules on the weekends or day off can help take away from of your insomnia. Avoid naps when possible or limit them to 10 to 30 minutes and only before 3 PM. Limit caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine, at least, eight hours before bed to get the energy out of your system. Avoid late night meals that are rich and heavy. Exercising for at least 30 minutes can help release some of your energy. Sticking to a routine can help you avoid a sleepless night with insomnia.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is also a common sleep disorder that affects nearly 22 million Americans. This disorder is when your breathing is temporarily stopped by a blocked airway. These pauses in breathing cause insufficient sleeping and could lead to being irritable, depressed, and exhausted during the day. Sleep apnea is a serious and potentially life-threatening disorder that can only be successfully treated by a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. This mask-like device delivers a stream of air into your airways while you sleep. This disorder can be helped by losing weight, sleeping on your side, and elevating your head. Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea include loud and chronic snoring; frequent pauses in breathing during sleep; gasping and choking during sleep; feeling exhausted when awake even after being in bed for a long period of time; and waking up with shortness of breath, chest pains, headaches, nasal congestions, and a dry throat.

RLS

Another common sleep disorder is restless legs syndrome (RLS). While most sleep disorders only affect adults, RLS affects more than 10 percent of adults and two percent of children throughout the U.S. and the U.K. RLS is a disorder that causes an almost irresistible urge to move your legs or arms. This urge can occur while lying down or resting and usually due to uncomfortable, tingling, or creeping sensation. Common symptoms of RLS is uncomfortable sensations deep within your legs, repetitive cramping or jerking your legs during sleep. RLS can be helped with stretching and medications.

There are many different types of sleeping disorders that can be helped by changing your lifestyles. Sleeping in different positions using an adjustable base or a new mattress can even help your RLS or sleep apnea. At All American Mattress, you can find a new mattress to help your sleeping disorder and to help you get back to sleep.
