Picking the Right Sleeping Positions for You

Finding the right sleeping position is an important part of getting a good night's sleep.

Finding the right sleeping position is an important part of getting a good night’s sleep.

When you go to bed each night, how do you get comfortable? Do you pass out face down, or lie flat on your back? Everyone settles in for the night in a slightly different way, but what does that mean for our sleep? The way that you sleep can have a significant effect on the way you wake up. Though we often put little thought into the physical way we fall asleep, perhaps we should. Different sleep positions can help with certain sleep ailments, so it pays to be more conscious of our unconsciousness.

Back to Basics

Though lying straight on your back is not the most common sleeping position, it is the healthiest. When you contort your body into various incredible shapes, it can put pressure on your spine, and your mattress will never get the chance to shine. Any good mattress is designed with support in mind. It is there to provide the support that your back and neck need after a long day of holding your body upright. When you lie flat on your back, the beneficial properties of your mattress are maximized, and your body gets optimal relaxation. On top of that, back sleeping is the best option when you want to keep your skin wrinkle-free and clear and your hair tangle-free.

The Bright Side

Side sleeping is by far the most popular position for snoozing. Side sleeping is a great option for some people, but in terms of health, it falls somewhere in the middle. For expectant mother’s sleeping on the left side can bring great relief. It increases blood flow to the heart and relieves pressure on your lower back. For those of us that aren’t pregnant, side sleeping can benefit us by easing heartburn and acid reflux. On the negative side, side sleeping can put a lot of pressure on your internal organs, so if this is your preferred position, try to alternate sides. If you’re a side sleeper, you know what it’s like to wake up with a numb arm. Side sleeping can restrict blood plow and put pressure on your nerves.

Stomach Sleeping

If you’re a stomach sleeper, the news isn’t good. Stomach sleeping, while common, isn’t really good for you. Snoring can be alleviated by rolling onto your stomach, but that is one of the only checks in the positive column for stomach sleeping. When you sleep on your stomach, your spine is forced to flatten, your neck is forced to turn, and this can cause undo stress on two very important parts of your body. Alleviate the issue by placing a pillow under your hips, and gradually switching to sleeping on your side.
