You already know how important it is to wash your sheets and pillowcases regularly, but how often do you actually clean your mattress? Just like everything else in your home, your mattress gets dirty and needs to be cleaned to get rid of oil, sweat, skin cells, dust mites, and more. Continue reading for three tips on how to easily clean your mattress!
Vacuum
One of the best things to clean your mattress with is a vacuum upholstery attachment. First, take off all the sheets and mattress cover, vacuum the top of the mattress and work your way with overlapping strokes. Vacuuming is a great way to remove dust and dead skin cells on the surface and is a quick way to keep your mattress fresh in between deep cleanings.
Deodorizing
Mattresses can soak up stains, oil, dust, and dirt, and when in a humid environment, it can develop a bad smell. The best way to get rid of this smell is by deodorizing with baking soda. After removing all sheets and covers, sprinkle baking soda on top of the mattress. Create a generous coating over the top surface, then lightly rub the baking soda into the mattress and let it sit for at least 10 minutes. Then, vacuum up the baking soda, and reveal a fresh smelling bed!
Lift Stains
If you don’t clean up stains immediately after they occur, they can seep into the fabric and become very challenging to remove. The most difficult stains to remove are urine and blood, so if your child has an accident or you have a nose-bleed in bed, be sure to take action right away. First, create a paste with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with one tablespoon of dish soap and one tablespoon of salt. Lightly spread the mixture over the stain and allow it to dry, then scrape away the paste after it has completely dried. Dab any discoloration with a rag dipped in some hydrogen peroxide, and the stain should be removed!
