Our mattress is something we all cherish deeply, as it provides us with a soft and comfortable place to rest every night. While mattresses may not seem too interesting, there are many random facts that you may have never heard. Continue reading to learn about a few fun facts about mattresses to increase your knowledge!
Recyclable
Did you know that you can recycle your mattress? Most people end up throwing out their old mattress, but there is a much more environmentally-friendly way to dispose of yours when it gets too old. In some states, it’s actually required by law to recycle an old mattress. There are several ways to recycle your old mattress, as places like The Salvation Army accept donations, or you may find a mattress store who will recycle it for you.
Fire Resistant For 30 Seconds
There is a US Federal Law that states that all mattresses sold in America must be able to withstand an open flame for at least 30 seconds before catching fire. If you can believe it, mattresses used to be made of combustible material- which is obviously extremely dangerous- so it’s a good thing it was made it law!
Double In Weight
While it’s a little gross to think about, mattresses can actually double their own weight over the course of ten years. This is due to the buildup of dust mites, sweat, and dead skin cells. This is why cleaning your mattress is so important, as vacuuming it regularly helps to reduce the amount of dust and skin cells. Also, a mattress protector is a great option for keeping allergens out. However, if you’ve had your mattress for ten years, it’s definitely time to purchase a new one!
Skip Making The Bed
While making your bed is a good way to start the day, it’s okay to occasionally skip this morning ritual. An uncovered mattress dries out better than one covered in sheets and a heavy comforter and is a less habitable place for dust mites. Leaving your bed unmade a few days a week may help to reduce your symptoms of allergies.
