Do you not get enough sleep? You’re not alone. As a society, we’re chronically sleep-deprived, which affects our mental and physical health, as well as our overall well-being and happiness. If you always wake up with a headache, feeling extremely tired, and rely on caffeine daily to keep you awake, you may have a more serious problem than just a bad night’s sleep- you could have a sleep disorder.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea sufferers experience micro-sleeps, which occur when part of your brain shuts down temporarily. If you often find yourself zoning out while staring at a screen or have to fight against closing your eyes in the middle of the day, that may be a sign of sleep apnea. Your brain is forcing you to nap because you didn’t get enough sleep at night, but these micro-sleeps usually only last about 10 seconds before your body wakes you up again.
Apnea means “without breathing,” meaning that people with sleep apnea often stop breathing during the night. They may not notice this, though, since the breathing doesn’t usually stop for too long. However, it can really take a toll on your sleeping, as you may be waking up 100 times during the night without even realizing it. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, see your doctor right away. In mild cases, lifestyle changes can solve the condition, but serious cases requirement a sleep mask or possibly surgery.
Insomnia
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that has always been prevalent, but today’s society is making the disorder worse. Caffeine, alcohol, poor sleep habits, and stress are all big triggers for insomnia, and today’s society has the mindset of always working or being online is causing more people to suffer. While having a hard time falling asleep may seem normal to you, you may have insomnia. You know you have it if it takes you more than half an hour to fall asleep, and you’re always restless at night. If this happens to you at least three times a week for a month, there’s a high chance you have insomnia.
To combat insomnia, you want to go to bed later at night. This may sound counterproductive, but if you go to bed by 10 pm and get out of bed by 8 am, you’re not helping your insomnia at all. This is because spending too much time in bed tells your body that you’ve overslept, even if you spent half the night wide awake. You want to stay in bed for about six hours- say midnight to 6 am, to reverse the sleep disorder. A moderate degree of sleep deprivation improves the quality of sleep, and over time you can start to get more hours of sleep- and actually sleep through the night.
