There are various types of sleep patterns, ranging from normal and healthy to abnormal and unhealthy. The National Sleep Foundation used data from a set of survey questions to create five types of “sleep personalities,” based on more than 40 factors including age, marital status, employment status, diagnosed medical conditions, the amount of caffeine consumed daily, and more. Continue reading to learn which sleep personality you identify with most!
Lively Larks
The healthiest sleep personalities are called Lively Larks. This group is made up of people who are very unlikely to be affected by sleep problems, and rarely ever have trouble getting the amount of sleep needed to feel alert and awake all day. Lively Larks are also typically younger than other groups and are often married/partnered and working full time. If this sounds like you and you consider yourself a morning person, you may be a very healthy sleeper!
Sleep Savvy Seniors
Sleep savvy seniors are next in line for healthy sleepers, including those around 60 years old (half of the group is 65 or older.) Seniors get the most sleep out of anyway, averaging at over 7 hours a night. You say that you’ve got a good night’s sleep more often than not, and average about two or more naps during the week, but rarely feel tired. While many seniors in this group have been diagnosed with a medical condition, they do not suffer from any sleep problems and are less at risk than other groups of developing a sleep disorder.
Dragging Duos
The Dragging Duos group most likely consists of those who are partnered and work over 40 hours a week, and typically work late- within the hour of going to sleep. They are mainly early risers, due to the work schedule, and are the group with the highest risk of not getting enough sleep. Duos often report that their partner has symptoms of insomnia, leading to problems in their personal relationship.
Overworked and Over-caffeinated
This group has the longest work week, and are more likely to work night shifts or irregular day shifts. Overworkers sleep less than other groups, but two-thirds nap frequently throughout the week. However, this group feels as though they need less sleep to function at their best, and believe they are getting as much sleep as needed. They also drink more caffeine than others, and seven in ten experience a symptom of insomnia.
Sleepless
The last group consists of those you believe they have a sleep problem or at least one symptom of insomnia. They are not likely to state they had a good night’s sleep, and half feel as though they are getting less sleep than needed. This group also states that their (or their partner’s) sleep disorders cause problems in the relationship more than other groups.
