The Health Risks Of Pulling An All-Nighter

Sleep disorders

Pulling all-nighters can result in some serious health problems.

When we were younger, pulling an all-nighter was seen as something fun we’d try at sleepovers with our friends. As we got older, all-nighters became more synonymous with cramming for a test or trying to finish piles of homework before school in the morning. While we all know the stressful feeling of not being able to complete our work or study enough for a test, but staying up all-night does not bring any positive results on your work the next day, and even results in negative effects on your health.

Lower Productivity

Whether you’re taking a test or going to work the day after staying up all night, your productivity will be significantly lower than usual. Sleep deprivation directly affects your brain, and students who often pulled all-nighters for tests averaged a lower GPA than those who never stayed up all night. Sleep deprivation results in headaches, memory loss, and an overall bad mood that makes the next day extremely unproductive.

Memory Loss

We’ve all heard the warning that all-nighters have an opposite effect on your brain while taking a test, and make it harder to remember any information that you just spent hours studying. Getting quality sleep is crucial for your memory, as your brain takes the time to repair and refresh itself after a long day as you sleep. If you don’t give your mind enough time to rest, your memory, attention span, and reasoning skills significantly decrease.

Body Fights Back

Have you ever been sleep deprived and suddenly get a bolt of energy? When you get this random surge of energy after a night of no sleep, it is your body trying to signal to your mind that it’s time to rest and give it time to recharge.

Higher Risk Of Stroke

Although you may live a healthy lifestyle, your sleep habits alone have an extreme effect on your health. For example, generally healthy adults who get fewer than six hours of sleep per night or four times more likely to suffer from a stroke than those who are healthy and sleep about eight hours per night.
