How to Wash and Care for Your Heavy Comforter

wash your heavy comforter

Learn the best practices for washing your heavy comforter at the end of winter.

In the midst of winter, you are likely still sleeping underneath a heavy comforter every night. While these sheets don’t require frequent washings, when you do wash these bulky items, it is important to treat them with care. Read on to learn the best method for cleaning your heavy comforter, as well as how to store your blankets once winter is over.

How to Prepare for Cleaning Heavy Comforters

Before you begin to undertake cleaning your bulky comforters, you should know how to be prepared. First, if you are planning on washing at home, make sure you have a front- or top-load washer to accommodate the fabric. If you don’t have that kind of washing machine, you can use a laundromat with a commercial-grade washer that can handle up to 75 pounds of laundry. Wash the comforter alone to reduce twisting and excessive lint.

Step One: Pretreat Stains

If you have any stains on your heavy comforter, first spread it out on your bed or a folding table to locate the stains. Use a solvent-based stain remover to treat the stains by applying the remover and working it in with a soft-bristled brush. Let the remover remain on the stain for about 15 minutes before placing the comforter into the washer.

Step Two: Select the Water Temperature and Washer Cycle

Use cold or warm water when washing your heavy comforter and set the washer for the largest load capacity before selecting the delicate or gentle cycle. Use slightly less than the recommended detergent amount to avoid excess soap and suds in the comforter fibers.

Step Three: Shake and Dry

After your comforter is finished with its wash cycle, give it a good shake before placing it in the dryer to help remove wrinkles. Place the comforter in the dryer and set it to low heat. Remove your heavy comforter once it is completely dry.

Step Four: Fold

If you fold or roll your bedding after removing it from the dryer, the comforter should not require any ironing.

How to Make This Process Even Easier

You can make the cleaning process even easier if you use a duvet or comforter cover. That way, the much less bulky duvet or comforter cover only needs to be removed from around the duvet in order to be washed.

How to Store Heavy Comforters and Blankets

To keep your blankets fresh and well-cared-for, you can store your heavy comforter in cotton or muslin bags, or plastic storage containers. If possible, store them under your bed or another climate-controlled area of the house. Avoid storing in the basement or attic, as the temperatures there can fluctuate greatly. Make sure the sheet is clean and completely dry before storing to avoid the formation of mold and mildew.
